Start with the test that applies to you.
Filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025? The 2008 test uses a bank of 100 questions: an officer asks up to 10, and you need 6 correct. Filed on or after that date? The 2025 test uses 128 questions: an officer asks up to 20, and you need 12 correct. Special rules and exceptions may apply; check USCIS guidance.

Which version of the civics test will I take?
USCIS uses your Form N-400 filing date. Before October 20, 2025, the 2008 test applies. On or after October 20, 2025, the 2025 test applies. Check the linked USCIS guidance for exceptions and special consideration.
Is the civics test the whole naturalization interview?
No. The officer also reviews your application and, unless you qualify for an exception, assesses English speaking, reading, and writing. This page describes the civics portion.
Can answers change before my interview?
Yes. Answers about elected or appointed officials can change. Use the name of the official serving at the time of your interview and check USCIS updates before test day.
