USCIS says applicants who filed before October 20, 2025 take the 2008 civics test. Its study bank contains 100 questions. An officer asks up to 10 questions; you need 6 correct answers. The officer stops after 6 correct or 5 incorrect answers.
On or after October 20, 2025
Applicants who filed on or after that date take the 2025 civics test. Its bank contains 128 questions. The officer asks up to 20 questions; you need 12 correct. The officer stops after 12 correct or 9 incorrect answers.
Check exceptions and current answers
Special consideration applies to some applicants, including the 65/20 provision. English-language exceptions are separate from the general test-version rule. Some answers change with elections and appointments, so check current USCIS guidance before your interview.
